Wipro’s Rishad Premji Says No to Work from Home: Here’s Why

Information technology major Wipro's Chairman Rishad Premji on Wednesday said more workers need to work from services rather than from their homes. He also said that coming to office helps in establishing a connect and an closeness which is veritably essential for us as humans, and made it clear that no technology can be of help on the same.

"You can not make that connectedness and closeness no matter how advanced technology gets. We are transient beings. I'm a great believer that we should be getting back (to services) in some shape and form.” Premji remarked during a speech at the NTLF 2023. According to Premji, the technology industry is one of the most "spoiled" industries where individuals appreciate this unusual method of working.

Mongrel working, in which a person works both from an office and from their home, is the future of work. He stated, "People should have the option to work from home, but they should also enter organisations." Premji said it was possible to work from homes in the original days of the epidemic but with the waste rising to record highs over the last two times, up to 60 per cent of pool in a company are new hires and they need to be get a taste of the culture in an organisation. He also made it clear that culture is a trip and not a destination, which can be readily achieved by ticking- off all the boxes.

He claims that Wipro has made the decision to modify its approach to accountability and productivity when employees work from home from one of control to one of trust. " The whole element of responsibility is moving in further and further to trust as opposed to control, and dealing with exceptions more stringently is the way forward," he said. In commentary on commercial leadership styles and how they've evolved, Premji said," I suppose that the days of the authoritarian leader are more and more dwindling. I'm a big religionist in the inclusive, caring and compassionate style of leading".
